RRS Pano-Gimbal Head
I have the Mk I version of this pano-gimble head, so cannot comment directly on this "improved" version. Since it has the same functions as the original unit, albeit with improved control knobs, however, I can compare it to the Wimberly full gimble head. I found the Wimberly head to require slightly less effort to pan and elevate than my RRS Pano-Gimbal example. However the RRS model still has all the requisite movements available, albeit with slightly more effort. Both can be balanced for vertical pivoting. However, there is one significant drawback to the Wimberly unit vs the RRS, and that is in the pano mode. The Wimberly unit does not have an adjustment available to center the lens over the R/L pivot point, which is available on the RRS model. So in sum, the Wimberly unit is fine for tracking in-flight subjects and may perhaps be slightly better than the RRS unit in this regard, it cannot combine that feature with accurate pano capabilities. As far as I have been able to determine, it cannot even be adapted to provide an accurate pivot point for pano shots as the RRS unit does. My recommendation is if you only need the tracking capabilities of the Wimberly unit, it will perform as well or better than the RRS unit. But if you want a unit that can track as well as provide perfect pano capabilities, then the RRS unit is the way to go, even if it costs more.
