Really Right Stuff 2013 Photo Contest: Water

Water is all around us; rain, ice, snow, clouds, streams, lakes, and oceans, all working to shape this beautiful world. In all of its forms, it is a beautiful subject. If the raw beauty of water isn't enough to inspire you to get out and take some pictures, perhaps our photo contest will! Oh, did we mention the winner of this contest will win a Really Right Stuff TVC-33 Tripod?

Subject

Water

The theme of this contest is "Water". Send us your shots depicting water in its wrath, at peace, giving life or however water inspires your photographic creativity. There are many physical states of water — please do not feel limited to shots of water in just its liquid state.

In all of its forms, it is a beautiful subject that can elicit so many emotions like hope, power and peace to name a few. To really capture all that water has to offer as a subject, a variety of techniques can be used. Below are a few that can be tried the next time you go out to get some water shots.

  1. Long exposure photography: When you find a stream or moving water in general, try using a long exposure to make the water turn into a silky, almost ethereal subject. This will soften the water while keeping everything else sharp when you use a good tripod and support system. However, when you use a longer shutter speed, you will have to compensate by changing your aperture or using a neutral density filter to get the correct exposure. This will take some practice, but the effect is very rewarding once you master it.
  2. Use the water as a reflective surface: Water can be a great mirror for a subject. Typically this is done with still water in a lake, pond or puddle, but if you are creative enough, you can use running water as well. Streams and rivers can reflect fall colors. Pouring water can give a vertical reflective surface to capture a scene from. Experiment and see what you can come up with. Try a variety of shutter speeds and the reflection will change dramatically.
  3. Use flash: Sometimes you may want to capture moving water in a moment in time — to freeze it when you would normally only see it moving. In bright conditions, this can be achieved by opening up the aperture and shooting with a very fast shutter speed (1250+), but there are many times when there just isn't enough light available. Well positioned flash can really help stop water in time to get that shot you're after. There are several photographers who even use flash to capture a wave while inside the tube to help "freeze" the wave. Again, the key is experimentation.
  4. Shoot through the water at a subject: I have seen some great shots where people have focused on an image through a water droplet or through water pouring out of a fountain spout. The way water bends the light and modifies the image can land you a great shot if you have the eye for it.
