Quick-Release Body Plates

Camera Body Mounting Plates

Our customized camera body plates are all Arca- Swiss style quick-release compatible. They are highly optimized in design and are precision machined. Plates come with captive-type mounting screws that feature a special, high strength head-to-shank cross section. Our plates are smaller, lighter, and more conforming in shape than those from other sources. All corners are beautifully radiused and feature precisely contoured anti-twist flanges for dedicated mating. This non-pivoting design serves to align the plate, and effectively prevents twisting. Really Right Stuff camera plates intentionally avoid the use of any cork or rubber-type padding.

There are two very good reasons for this:

  • Direct mating of the camera body and the mounting plate—without any intervening sponginess— improves the mass coupling between the tripod and camera. This assures best vibration damping and enhances rigidity.
  • By providing a plate where the flat metal mounting surface is in direct contact with the camera body’s tripod socket, there is inherent protection against the possibility of over-torque on installation. If there was a layer of rubber between the plate and the camera body, excessive torque could act to pull the socket housing down further, into that rubber, toward the plate. This uneven stress could cause damage to the camera base-plate, or to internal printed-wiring circuit boards behind that base-plate.

Basic Camera Plate Styles

We offer three basic body plate styles: Conventional, special, and bidirectional. All feature anti-twist flanges or pins (except B35 & BPnS), and have ¼"–20 or 3⁄8"-16 hex-socket screws mounted in either a threaded socket or a slot (threaded at only one end). We also offer many custom L-type body plates. Safety stops are included on most plates. All plates come with hex keys for installation: use 5⁄32" for ¼"-20 screws (B101 screws), use 7⁄32" for 3⁄8"-16 screws (B102 screws), and either 3⁄32" or metric 2.5 for our safety stop screws (shop here for hardware).

Conventional plates are typically rectangular in shape and have contoured flanges that hug either the rear of the camera body, or the front, or sometimes both. All L-plates are also conventional plates (except B49L which is bidirectional). The dovetail on these plates runs parallel to the film plane or digital sensor to allow left/right adjustments. All conventional plates (but not L-plates) feature safety stop screws to prevent free-fall when camera is flopped over into the drop notch for vertical aspect. Orient the clamp channel side-to-side.

Special fore/aft plates have a dovetail running in a front/back orientation, and have a flange that mounts to either the front or rear of the camera. They’re generally more suitable for medium format cameras that present a deep (thick) profile. All fore/aft plates feature safety stop screws at the rear. Orient the clamp channel fore/aft.

Bidirectional plates are square (1½" square) and the dovetail runs the full perimeter of the plate (all four sides). This feature allows a bidirectional plate to drop into the clamp no matter its orientation. Bidirectional plates are not compatible with safety stops.

Bidirectional plates have dovetails on all four sides,
Fore-Aft plates slide in the clamp from front-to-back, and
Conventional plates slide in the clamp from left-to-right.
